Outer Banks Beaches are unique in their own right. There are many places that fires are allowed on the beach and four-wheel drive vehicles are allowed to travel the beaches in specified areas. From
Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend lifeguards are provided for all outer banks teaches; except for the town of duck where lifeguards or on the beach from 1 May through the end of October. Roving lifeguards also patrol many beaches.
Outer Banks beaches can be a really fun place to surf or swim but it is unlike swimming in any other area of the United States.
Flags are posted confirming swimming conditions and sometimes swimming is prohibited. Warning flags may fly when the weather seems fine, but follow the
guidelines as tidal currents near inlets, rip currents, littoral currents and
shifting sand can make it very dangerous. All lifeguard stations post swimming tips for safety, you should become familiar with these.
